The Mullingar Concert Band, with conductor John Walsh at it’s helm, was
launched in Autumn 2021 with the aim of encouraging adult musicians of varying standards to join together to play music, learn, socialise and have fun. It is a part of, but also a natural extension of the renowned Mullingar Town Band with many of it’s members having previously played with the Town Band over the years. MTB Gig Band
The MTB Gig Band is a new performance ensemble comprising more experienced members of the Mullingar Town Band playing a mixture of soul, hip-hop, pop and rock tunes. The Gig Band has been in gestation since the inspiring visit of Spirit of 52 showband from Rastede, Germany – which saw the bands come together to play an evening gig in Clarks Bar.
Following from this, the Gig Band has developed a dedicated programme to cater for the unique instrumentation in the band which currently includes 4 Trumpets, 2 Alto Saxes, 2 Tenor Saxes, 3 Trombones, 1 Euphonium, 1 Baritone Sax, Bass guitar and drums. The programme has developed to include some old band favourites and some new pieces which have been arranges specifically for the group. The group provides members with experience in another type of performance style where improvisation and personal expression are encouraged. The Gig Band recently had a very successful showcase gig in the Stables venue on Friday 28th of April. The band played to a full house of friends, family and pleasantly surprised Smiddy regulars who wanted to see where all the racket was coming from!!! Building on the strength of the Stables gig the Gig band are looking forward to further developing their programme and a busy summer of performances including busking in Mullingar town square, pop up performance as part of the Fleadh Fringe and other music festivals around the country!! |
